July 11 , 2007 – New local charitable foundations have formed in Escondido, Carlsbad, the Ranch Communities and Oceanside, joining the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation as affiliates of The San Diego Foundation.
These successes were celebrated at The San Diego Foundation’s 32nd Annual Meeting at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The Foundation also welcomed David Bejarano, John Cambon, Ted Chan, M.D. and Judith Harris to its Board of Governors.
The San Diego Foundation has been focusing efforts on reaching out region-wide via an initiative called Endow Your Communities. The Endow Your Community effort grew out of the Endow San Diego movement to inform and inspire San Diegans regarding the benefits of endowment. Providing charitable funds both for immediate grantmaking and for generations to come, the Endow Your Community initiative engages charitably-inclined individuals, families and organizations in making the community around them a better place to live and give.
“We are so proud of the success of Endow Your Community,” states Bob Kelly, president of The Foundation. “The interest and involvement across the region proves that San Diego needed something like this out in their communities. As this initiative continues, we hope to get more communities involved, ensuring that our region will continue to be great.”
Among communities that have already joined Endow Your Community are Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego and the Ranch Communities. The Escondido Charitable Foundation, formed in November 2006, has been a great success with over 105 members contributing $637,000 in pledges and contributions over the next five years. The Escondido Charitable Foundation also recently released its first grantmaking guidelines, making $86,000 available to Escondido in their first year and over $105,000 in their endowment fund.
The annual meeting highlighted the 2006 fiscal year in which The San Diego Foundation granted out $54 million to nonprofits and organizations across the San Diego region and opened a record 145 new funds.
