March 16, 2007 – The San Diego Foundation and the City of San Diego Arts and Culture Commission announced today that Felicia Shaw, current Program Manager at the Commission, will continue her work in the arts and culture community by becoming the Director of the Arts & Culture Program at The San Diego Foundation.
Shaw will replace Julie Fry, currently the Director of The Foundation’s Arts & Culture Program. Fry will remain at The Foundation, changing roles with a promotion to Associate Vice President, Fund Services. Shaw will lead the program by continuing relationships with local nonprofits and through engaging local, regional, and national donors to support the arts in San Diego. Shaw will oversee and implement strategies being developed through convenings, funding partnerships, and research reports such as pARTicipate San Diego. With a Working Group of committed community leaders, Shaw will oversee the annual planning process and grantmaking strategy to meet the most critical needs of San Diego's arts nonprofits and develop funding priorities for grantmaking.
“From her years at the Commission, Felicia brings a wealth of experience in the arts and culture sector to the important work of The San Diego Foundation,” states Roger Cornell, Arts & Culture Working Group Chair. “She will continue to implement strategies to build cultural participation and support of the arts in the region that the Arts & Culture Working Group began at its inception almost four years ago.”
As Program Manager for the Commission, Shaw’s 12 years at the City included strategic planning and organizational development, oversight of the agency's allocations programs, and the implementation of special initiatives.
"Felicia is an extraordinary arts administrator who has been a key player in growing and implementing Commission programs and initiatives that have received national attention over the past decade. Though she will be sorely missed at the Commission as a colleague and a friend, I look forward to working with her in this new leadership position," said Commission Executive Director Victoria Hamilton.
Felicia began her career in the arts in 1985 as an art consultant for community-based nonprofit arts and culture organizations. As the first cultural arts coordinator for the City of Chula Vista, she organized special events and other arts related programs for residents and visitors.
A graduate of LEAD San Diego, Felicia also shares her expertise on a number of boards and advisory committees such as Partners for Livable Places, San Diego, the California Cultural Tourism Coalition and the Carlsbad Arts Commission. She is a frequent panelist and juror with other nonprofit and governmental agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts and California Arts Council.
Felicia received her BA in Communications from Northwestern University and completed post-graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego.
