The San Diego Foundation Awards $400,360 In Grants To The San Diego Community

The San Diego Foundation announced 43 grants to San Diego County at its Grant Awards Ceremony on December 15, 2000, at the Schaetzel Center in La Jolla, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Twenty-nine grants from the Community Endowment Grants Program were announced, in the amount of $349,600. Fourteen Neighborhood Civic Fund grants were announced, in the amount of $50,760.

The Community Endowment Grants Program of The San Diego Foundation supports nonprofit projects that improve the quality of life of San Diegans. Twice a year, competitive grants are awarded in the fields of arts and culture, civil society, employment and economic development, education, environment, and health and human services. Grant amounts vary from $5,000 to $25,000. Community Endowment Grants were awarded to the following San Diego organizations:

  • Able - Disabled Advocacy
    CAPEability
    Able - Disabled Advocacy provides county-wide employment and training services to people with all types of disabilities, placing over 6,000 people into jobs over the past 25 years. Through the CAPEability project, Able-Disabled Advocacy will provide School-to-Career transitional employment services to 60 Special Education youth and their families. At least 20 students will be placed in jobs in their chosen career path.

  • Access Center of San Diego
    Wheelchair and Medical Equipment

    The Access Center has been providing information, referral, and advocacy services to individuals with disabilities for 25 years. Each year the organization spends up to $125,000 on medically necessary wheelchairs and equipment for people whose Medicare claims have been denied. The Access Center is also home to the "Spoke Shop" that provides assistance to individuals in repairing and replacing wheelchair parts and accessories.

  • ANGELS Foster Family Agency
    Foster Child Matching Program

    ANGELS is an organization that rescues abused, abandoned, and neglected children and then places them in foster homes. ANGELS matches foster babies with well-screened and trained foster families committed to caring for them until family reunification or adoption. ANGELS will recruit and train at least 20 foster families and place 30 infants with families in 2001.

  • Assistance League of San Diego County
    Operation School Bell

    Assistance League of San Diego County has met the needs of seniors, high school students, and elementary students for 35 years. Operation School Bell will provide funding for the purchase of appropriate school clothing for over 1,800 children at 104 schools throughout the county. Each child is given two new outfits or uniforms in order to assist with the improvement in school performance and self esteem.

  • Bayview Baptist Church
    Operation Ascend

    Bayview Baptist Church, established in 1963, has a current membership of over 2,500 individuals. As a way to promote community participation Bayview Baptist Church led a partnership with teachers, parents, and residents to support a charter petition that resulted in the Nubia Leadership Academy in Southeast San Diego. Operation Ascend is an effort to strengthen the literacy and mathematical skills of 150 students at the Nubia Academy through a before- and after-school program linking mathematics with music.

  • Casa De Amparo
    Technology Upgrade Project

    Casa de Amparo, founded in 1978, has served over 5,000 abused and neglected children and families in North County since its inception. Currently, several services are offered, including a Residential Crisis Center, Family Support Services, Supervised Family Visitation Services, and a Child Development Center. Casa de Amparo will purchase ten computers and ten printers to enable the clinical and child care staff the ability to handle an increased number of cases.

  • Castle Park Middle School
    Vocal Music Program
    The Vocal Music program at Castle Park Middle School in South Bay has successfully created positive relationships through performances throughout the community since 1997. The Choir Program will purchase a new classroom piano for better and safer performances on campus and a new sound system to provide for performing opportunities off campus. This equipment will further build pride in over 100 students who are currently enrolled in the program and positive connections with the community.

  • Citizens' Scholarship Foundation
    San Diego Dollars for Scholars Chapter Expansion

    Dollars for Scholars chapter volunteers have awarded over $108 million in scholarships to more than 215,000 students nationally since 1958. In San Diego, there are currently nine chapters. With the addition of a permanent staff member, the number of local students who will receive financial aid for college will increase. At least four new San Diego chapters will be added and at least two new Collegiate Partners will be added.

  • Consensus Organizing Institute
    Youth Leadership Institute
    The goal of the Consensus Organizing Institute, established in 1994, is to help agencies, including schools, become catalysts for civic engagement. This initiative will provide 15 to 20 San Diego High School students with training and hands-on experience in asset mapping, community building, and problem solving. The students' work will enhance their civic skills, create new relationships among residents, and disseminate information about specific issues.

  • Epilepsy Society of San Diego County Latino Community Project
    The Epilepsy Foundation, in operation since 1954, is the only private nonprofit health agency providing epilepsy services in the County. The Latino Project will help individuals with epilepsy and their families overcome the physical, emotional, and social problems associated with seizure disorders. This project will provide outreach to over 1,100 individuals to encourage Latinos to obtain the information and assistance they need, and will provide them with a means to do so.

  • Heritage of the Americas Museum Educational Materials Publishing Project
    The Heritage of the Americas Museum at Cuyamaca College, a cultural heritage and natural history museum, shows continued growth in attendance, volunteer support, and educational programs. The Museum serves San Diego County as the only facility of its kind in East County where educational opportunities expand with community growth. This project provides equipment for in-house publishing of educational study guides furnished free of charge on an annual basis to over 2,000 children between the ages of three to eight.

  • Human Development Foundation
    Open Gate Program

    The Human Development Foundation has provided educational resources to students through the Open Gate Program for highly gifted, low-income students in 20 elementary schools since 1998. Working in partnership with the San Diego City Schools, nearly 40 students are enrolled in the program this year. The objective is to raise students' basic academic skills to the 80 to 90 percentiles by the end of the fifth grade.

  • Intermountain Park and Recreation, Inc.
    Children's Playground Equipment

    Intermountain Park & Recreation, Inc., is run by volunteers to provide recreational, social, and cultural programs that build character and enrich the lives of all residents of the Julian area. The purpose of the Children's Playground Equipment project is to replace a much needed play structure that will create a safe and fun environment for the residents and visitors of Julian by providing equipment that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Jazz Artists Guild
    Music-In-Schools

    The Jazz Artists Guild has reached over 42,000 San Diego County school students with live in-school jazz musical performances. Over 3,600 students at 18 San Diego County schools will attend live jazz musical performances in 2001 to encourage them to learn about and appreciate music arts. The goal is to seek increased participation in school music programs and a lifelong heightened appreciation for all forms of music.

  • Mama's Kitchen
    2000 Critical Improvements

    Mama's Kitchen has delivered over 1,000,000 meals to poor, disabled, and emotionally devastated AIDS patients and their children throughout San Diego County since 1990. The 2000 Critical Improvements project will allow for the purchase of a computer, a scanner, and other needed supplies for the staff that will allow for assistance in development and increased recruiting of volunteer staff.

  • Monarch High School Project
    The Art Squad

    Monarch High School provides an environment where homeless and at-risk teenagers can reclaim their lives through education. Monarch's academic programs lead students to a high school degree, teach job training skills, and enable personal development skills through arts and mentoring programs. Funding for the school's arts education program, known as the "Art Squad," will enable the hiring of peer educators and the purchase of other needed supplies for approximately 350 students.

  • Museum of Photographic Arts Exposure
    The Museum of Photographic Arts, located in Balboa Park, encourages and develops creative activities and programs in the photographic arts. The Exposure project provides under-served students in-school and on-site sessions, stimulating creativity, visual literacy, and art appreciation. The project takes art into the classroom and then provides for transportation of students to visit the museum. The project will serve ten schools during 2001 and reach approximately 300 students.

  • North County Serenity House, Inc.
    Graduate Aftercare

    Serenity House was the first North County facility devoted exclusively to providing alcohol/drug recovery services to women. Recently added were eight homes, childcare facilities, and services to serve over 300 women and children annually. The Graduate Aftercare Program addresses a service gap by helping women graduates of alcohol/drug recovery programs to succeed for life through ongoing support and training. The goal of the program is that 80 percent of participating graduates will remain clean and sober at the completion of the first year. In the first year, 75 women and 125 children will benefit.

  • Partners - A United Methodist Church Mentoring Program
    Youth Mentoring

    Partners Mentorship Program provides one-to-one mentoring for at-risk and first-time youth offenders, ages ten to 17. Youth served have shown significant improvement in the areas of behavior, academics, and abstinence from drugs. The Youth Mentoring Project will support the addition of two Social Work Interns. Through this project, Partners expects to increase its youth/mentor matches to 120 per year.

  • People For Trees
    Plan to Plant

    People for Trees has planted over 30,000 street trees, organized more that 30,000 volunteers, and channeled over three million dollars in funding back into local communities since 1989. The Plan to Plant Project will provide a new phone system, computer equipment, and mapping software needed to better plan and organize the activities and events of the organization.

  • San Diego Black Nurses Association
    Community Organ Donation

    The San Diego Black Nurses Association, an organization of healthcare professionals and nursing students, has been in existence since 1976. The goal of the organization is to improve the health of African Americans in San Diego County. The Community Organ Donation project seeks to work with local clergy on increasing the outreach and awareness of African Americans on the enormous need for organ and tissue donations.

  • San Diego Hospice Foundation
    Information Management System

    San Diego Hospice was the first hospice provider and remains as San Diego County's largest provider of end-of-life services. Since 1977, the organization has served the needs of residents of San Diego County. The Information Management System Project seeks to increase the capacity of the organization through the purchase of needed software programs that will better assist in development and volunteer tracking.

  • San Diego Region, California Regional Environmental
    Education Community Network

    Teacher Roundtables and Professional Development San Diego Region, California Regional Environmental Education Community Network has connected hundreds of educators countywide with environmental education resources through educational convocations, interagency collaborations, online resources, information, and referral. The Teacher Roundtables and Professional Development Project provides trainings on important local environmental education topics for interested public school educators in five county school districts to over 4,500 students through five workshops in one year.

  • San Diego Symphony Orchestra
    Education Initiative: Peter and the Wolf

    The San Diego Symphony, an organization that traces its roots to 1910, remains at the center stage as one of San Diego's major cultural institutions. The Peter and the Wolf Project is the first in a three-year initiative that will bring symphonic music to at least ten San Diego County Schools and over 5,000 students per year.

  • St. Stephen's Church of God in Christ
    Youth Community Health and Social Education and Prevention After School
    St. Stephen's has established over 30 outreach programs since 1962. The after-school program will provide education and support at three to five different sites for approximately 250 teens in the Southeast San Diego area. Teens will be educated through a series of workshops on a wide variety of topics, including sex education, drug and alcohol use, gang and domestic violence, and peer pressure.

  • University of California, San Diego Cancer Center Foundation
    Black Cosmetologists Promoting Health Program, Phase II
    The University of California, San Diego Cancer Center has operated the Black Cosmetologists Promoting Health Program for the past seven years. The goal of the program is to provide outreach and education to the African American community via community educators located in hair salons throughout San Diego. Over the course of the next year, the program will continue to advance the health of the community which it serves by working with at least ten stylists.

  • Unyeway, Inc.
    Video Project

    Unyeway has been dedicated to enhancing and enriching the lives of persons with developmental disabilities by training, employing, and empowering them in their communities. This project will find employment for 30 individuals, and educate school children and the public on the advantages of working and living in a diverse community which includes people with disabilities.

  • Winston School of San Diego
    Graphic Design and Computer Arts Program

    In the last 12 years, the Winston School has helped hundreds of students struggling with learning differences to overcome their weaknesses and succeed in entering colleges and vocational schools. This program will further its mission by providing over 100 students with critical multimedia and graphic design skills and knowledge.

  • YWCA of San Diego County
    Career Counseling Services
    Young Women's Christian Association initiated job-training programs for women during 1920's, when such programs were otherwise unavailable. Career Counseling Services offers residents career/aptitude assessments, computer tutorials, and job readiness/retention modules. The goal of the project is to increase employment rates, gain higher wages, and promote greater independence for at least 350 women who are clients of the shelter.

    The San Diego Foundation Neighborhood Civic Fund (NCF) is designed to challenge unincorporated neighborhood groups to support inclusiveness, civic participation, and neighborhood development activities in their own communities. For every $100 raised by the members of the local Neighborhood Civic Fund, The San Diego Foundation will award $1,000, up to a total of $5,000 per fund. NCF grants were awarded to the following San Diego neighborhood organizations:

  • Cherokee Point Neighborhood Association: to continue senior outreach, improve neighborhood appearance, and capitalize on current momentum in the Cherokee Point neighborhood in City Heights.
