Mission Statement
The mission of the Weingart-Price Fund is to provide financial
and other support to qualified agencies and institutions that:
- Provide services through local organizations to the inner-city
neighborhoods of San Diego County, and to Imperial County, with
a special emphasis on those serving disadvantaged youth.
- Fund innovative inner-city projects that can be replicated in
other communities.
History of the Weingart-Price Fund
In 1998 the Price Family Charitable Fund entered into a partnership
with the Weingart Foundation (Los Angeles) to establish a major
charitable fund at the San Diego Foundation. The Weingart Foundation
has been a major contributor to non-profit organizations in San
Diego for many years. By combining its efforts with the San Diego-based
Price Family Charitable Fund, the Weingart Foundation believes that
its philanthropic efforts in San Diego and Imperial Counties will
become even more effective.
Funding Guidelines
The Price Family Charitable Fund is the adviser to the Weingart-Price
Fund. The following guidelines for funding requests have been established:
- All donor recipients must be section 501(c)(3) qualified organizations.
- Organizations receiving funds must be based in San Diego or Imperial Counties (California) and the funds must be expended for the benefit of citizens in these two counties.
Grants will generally be made:
- To provide support to organizations which can demonstrate that they deliver their services effectively and efficiently;
- To provide financial support for innovative and well-conceived pilot programs directed toward youth or the disadvantaged with special emphasis on those who live in City Heights (San Diego).
Those requesting program grants will need to demonstrate a capacity to measure and quantify results and, hopefully, have a reasonable chance of replication in other communities.
Grant Request Procedure
The Weingart-Price Fund accepts and processes requests for grants
throughout the year. A qualifying organization that believes it
meets the Fund's criteria for a grant should submit a brief letter
to the San Diego Foundation containing a concise description of
the organization, its need for funds, the amount requested, the
expected outcome if the grant is approved, what differentiates this
program from others currently existing in the community and how
the program will be evaluated. Letters should be sent, along with
a copy of the IRS charitable tax status determination letter, to:
The San Diego Foundation, 2508 Historic Decatur Road, Suite 200, San
Diego, CA 92106, Attn: Weingart-Price Fund.
The San Diego Foundation, with the assistance of the Price Family
Charitable Fund, will review all grant requests in a timely manner.
The San Diego Foundation will inform the applicant of the status of
its request and of any follow-up action required.
Program Limitations
Grants are not made:
- For propagandizing, influencing legislation and/or elections, promoting voting registration; for political candidates, political campaigns or organizations engaged in political activities
- To federated appeals or to organizations that collect funds for redistribution to other non-profit groups
- To religious institutions
Grants are generally not approved for:
- Regular, ongoing operating support, contingencies, deficits or debt reduction

All applicants should be aware that there are a limited number of grant requests that can be awarded from the Weingart-Price Fund each year. A lack of favorable response should not be considered a reflection upon the merits of any organization or its request.
