Community Compass: Vision
The goal of Community Compass is to make our region a national leader in K-12 mathematics and science education. We see a future where every student, regardless of neighborhood, family income, or ethnic background:
- Has attained knowledge and critical thinking skills grounded in learning science and mathematics,
- Participates in effective science enrichment programs,
- Receives high-level instruction from qualified teachers confident in their own scientific literacy, and
- Graduates from high school with the capability to compete for educational and employment opportunities of their choosing.
With grant opportunities from the Community Grants Fund and working through strategic alliances with other community leaders and private citizens, we can make this future a reality. The STWG measures progress toward its vision by:
- Systemic opportunities for leadership development, specifically targeting middle school mathematics and science teachers.
- Expanded support and increased capacity of key nonprofit organizations serving K-12 mathematics and science education.
- Sustainability of these programs, and the nonprofit organizations that support them, through a robust community endowment.
- An increase in the number of individuals of the San Diego technology workforce need that is met by local talent.
- An increase in the number of San Diego companies across all sectors, but particularly in clusters of innovation, that contribute to the improvement of mathematics and science education in our local schools.
- Demonstrated commitment by the San Diego region through support of the Science & Technology Fund for the Common Good.
