Founded in 1903, Scripps has been a leader in climate research since the 1950s, when Charles Keeling began his pioneering measurements of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Today, Scripps scientists continue cutting-edge investigations of the causes and pace of climate change and its implications for California and the world.

The California Climate Change Center was established by the California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research Program in 2003. The center is a virtual organization with core research activities at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Califnria, Berkeley, and additional, complementary efforts at other research institutions.

In January 2007, the San Diego Regional Energy Office unveils its portion of the $2.8 billion California Solar Initiative which provides rebates and incentives to businesses, government, and consumers to install solar panels on rooftops across the County.

The County of San Diego has created incentive programs, policies, ordinances, and guidelines to promote green building design and construction. The Green Building Program is encourages homeowners and builders to build using environmentally sound practices. An Inconvenient Truth is Al Gore’s documentary film that was developed to accompany the book that shares its name. The film focuses on the causes and consequences of climate change, with a call to take action to stop global warming. Climatecrisis.net is the official website for the film, containing information on the science behind global warming, as well as ways to take action on global warming.

On February 16, 2005 the Kyoto Protocol, the international agreement to address climate disruption, became law for the 141 countries that have ratified it to date.
