Land and Watershed Conservation Initiative

This initiative will advance the completion of a network of recreational parks and natural areas on rivers, canyons, lagoons and beaches to provide healthy lands, clean water and habitat for people and wildlife. The Foundation supports organizations whose programs contribute to one or more of the following:

Expected Results of the Initiative over the next three years:

  • Acquisition of an additional 3,300 acres annually for a total of 10,000 acres of critical habitats and culturally-sensitive lands by 2012.
  • Increased ability of at least 6 nonprofit organizations to develop and implement land management plans, monitoring protocols, and public use directives in coordination with public agencies for recreational parks and natural areas by 2012.
  • Increase of $10 million in private and public funding secured annually, for a total of $30 million by 2012, through support of nonprofits working to acquire, manage, and monitor parks and natural areas.
  • Recruit and train at least 60 new, long term volunteers (at least 20 annually for docents, habitat/wildlife monitoring, etc.) and at least 600 short-term volunteers (at least 200 annually for canyon clean ups, advocacy, etc.).
