Focus 2050 Study for the San Diego Region

In 2050, what will it be like to live, work and play in the San Diego region? What will be our major challenges and opportunities for sustaining and enhancing our quality of life?

The San Diego Foundation is funding a regional study on the future implications of climate change. The Focus 2050 study will serve as a guideline for regional action, providing a snapshot of what our region may look like in 2050 if current trends continue. The anticipated completion date is June 2008.

Focus 2050 will focus on eight interrelated areas:
    • Climate change
    • Population growth
    • Land use and sprawl
    • Transportation
    • Health care
    • Energy
    • Water
    • Biodiversity and habitat

This study is modeled after the Seattle-area "Focus 2050" which served as a guideline for the action plan developed by Ron Sims, elected Executive of King County.

The San Diego Foundation's Focus 2050 report will be for key decision-makers from municipalities, SANDAG, the County of San Diego, Port of San Diego, tribal governments, the business community, nonprofits, and the academic community to use in planning, policy measures, and investment strategies to: (1) reduce regional greenhouse gas emissions; and (2) develop and implement adaptation strategies for potentially harmful economic, social, and ecological consequences of climate change in our region.
