PURPOSE OF POSITION

Plan and execute the annual giving program, as well as manage and implement the overall strategic marketing and public relation efforts for The Foundation.  The Director assists with overall writing needs including press releases, talking points, marketing materials and collateral.  The Director also manages all aspects of the Annual Report and quarterly newsletter publications, serving as editor.  This position serves as back-up to the Vice President, Marketing & External Affairs, providing continuity for The Foundation and supervising the department in the absence of the VP.

RESULTS EXPECTED & PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Coordinate the Annual Giving program, including developing strategies for prospecting, solicitation, communications and appreciation events, generating a minimum of $125,000 in revenue.
  • Manage the overall strategic public relation efforts for The Foundation and affiliates, generating and tracking 20 placements Foundation-wide per quarter.
  • Manage and implement marketing strategies and communication plans, including web, graphics, advertising, public relations, identity, display, presentations and publications for the Foundation’s numerous programs and initiatives, as well as all affiliates.  Evaluate and report results of effectiveness.
  • Manage all marketing strategies focusing on charitable giving and efforts to establish and contribute to funds.
  • Manage Foundation publications from planning to story assignment, writing, editing and production.
  • Produce an annual report that reflects the past year’s accomplishments and activities and is on message, on budget, accurate and on time.
  • Publish quarterly newsletter, Foundation Insider, achieving the following results:
    • E-blast open rate = 25%
    • Clicks through to online version of newsletter = 4%
    • Pride of affiliation – recorded comments per quarter with positive feedback from Board of Governors, Volunteers, fund advisors, donors, prospects = 10
  • Produce the bi-monthly Board Bulletin email, to communicate updates from the President & CEO and the Board Chair.
  • Work with internal and external resources to identify and publicize compelling stories to promote The Foundation and affiliates in the media, newsletters, on website, in public presentations, and other venues.
  • Plan and steward advertising and publishing budgets, overseeing media placement and ad development and production.
  • Manage Foundation events, such as The Annual Meeting, and assist with department -specific events as needed.
  • Recruit media partners, spokespeople and sponsors for The Foundation.
  • Oversee The Foundation’s and affiliate web site content and efficiencies.
  • Maintain a broad understanding of the San Diego community and use this knowledge to build and maintain relationships with individuals and organizations that are instrumental toThe Foundation’s success.
  • Establish and maintain critical media relations with key contacts for The Foundation and affiliates. Maintain a current media list as well as strong relationships with print, broadcast and digital media.
  • Represent The Foundation in the community.
  • Interface with outside vendors, including advertising and public relations agencies, as needed for the Annual Report, website and publications.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 5 years fundraising experience, with a particular emphasis on individual prospecting and solicitation as well as annual giving programs
  • Minimum of 10  years progressive marketing, management, sales, and supervisory experience
  • Experience with advertising, public relations, corporate communications, website content, direct mail and vendor project management
  • Past employment as a marketing professional in a for-profit or nonprofit organization
  • Knowledge of  full scope of effective marketing & communication techniques
  • Media relation contacts throughout the San Diego region
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in a people-oriented environment
  • Self-directed
  • Problem solver
  • Computer literate, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Email
  • Thrives in fast-changing environment
  • Experience managing and working with volunteers preferred

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in sales, marketing, communications or related field

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
