Science & Technology Innovative Grants

The San Diego Foundation has an initiative to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in the greater San Diego area for grades K-12. This year, the Science & Technology Working Group created an innovative three-stage capacity building process to solicit proposals for the evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of ongoing or new initiatives. In the first stage, informational sessions on techniques of rigorous evaluation protocols were provided by Dr. Julian Betts, UCSD Professor, who is an expert in analyzing public school performance. Next, consulting sessions were offered to applicants explaining the evaluation protocols. Finally, nonprofits entered the grant application process well-informed and equipped for success. This thorough and transparent process identified five nonprofits – San Diego County Office of Education, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Rueben H. Fleet Science Center, BIOCOM Institute and San Diego Workforce Partnership -- who deliver informal science education in STEM areas. Each received a $25,000 grant to continue their efforts.
