At a Time of Increased Need Due to the Economy, $3 Million Will Fund Critical Health and Human Service Programs

October 7, 2009 – The San Diego Foundation and the Alliance Healthcare Foundation are pleased to announce that more than $3 million has been awarded to nonprofit organizations serving the healthcare needs of residents in the Paradise Valley Hospital service area. Of the $3 million, nearly $2.8 million came from the Paradise Valley Hospital Community Health Fund, which was created when the hospital was sold to Prime Healthcare Services in 2007. Additionally, more than $270,000 was granted directly from The San Diego Foundation.

Grant funds were awarded to organizations in the top-five zip codes served by Paradise Valley Hospital: 91950, 92114, 92113, 92139, and 91911. The funded programs focus on improving access to care for primary and preventive health care services, and/or behavioral health services.

Grantee organizations are:

  • California Dental Association Foundation    $289,776
  • Metro-CASBIRT $500,000
  • San Ysidro Health Centers $400,000
  • SAY San Diego $382,500
  • Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute $384948
  • Sharp Healthcare Foundation $415,650
  • South Bay Community Services $500,000
  • UCSD Student Fun Free Clinic $198,800

Total:  $3,071,674

As part of the process, residents and healthcare providers in the area provided input through open forums and surveys, ensuring that the grant making program reflected community needs. A volunteer Advisory Committee of civic leaders and health experts convened over seven months to make grant decisions.

“We are pleased to provide funding to this group of outstanding nonprofit organizations, which do a tremendous job serving the healthcare needs of the community surrounding the Paradise Valley Hospital,” said Dr. Nora Faine, chair of The San Diego Foundation’s Health and Human Services Working Group. “As a result of our invaluable partnerships with the Alliance Healthcare Foundation and the Paradise Valley Community Fund Advisory Committee, we are confident that these grant awards will help meet the healthcare needs of this area’s residents and satisfy the conditions of the Paradise Valley Community Health Fund.”

For media purposes, we are able to help coordinate interviews with members of the grantee organizations, as well as spokespeople from The San Diego Foundation and Alliance Healthcare Foundation. We can also provide more extensive information on the specific programs funded. For more information, please contact Deirdre Maloney at Deirdre@sdfoundation.org or call 619-235-2300.
