Public invited to make online donations to nearly 400 nonprofits enrolled in the Foundation’s BetterGiving portrait program during the 36-hour event

Nov. 11, 2011 - The San Diego Foundation will launch its innovative and empowering giveBIG Campaign at 7:00 a.m. PST on December 14, 2011. The campaign will run for 36 hours, ending December 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m PST.

GiveBIG is an online networking and giving event that provides nearly 400 nonprofits enrolled in The Foundation's BetterGiving program with the opportunity to gain exposure to and start relationships with new donors. San Diego Magazine and ABC 10 have joined in the effort to promote the power of giving during this event. San Diegans will have a unique opportunity to multiply their charitable donations as The San Diego Foundation will match, on a pro-rated basis, the total of donations from $25 to $10,000 made during the 36-hour period.

Individual and business donors are encouraged to visit www.giveBIGsandiego.org to access the giveBIG event and donate to the affiliated charity of their choice. "The giveBIG campaign," said Bob Kelly, President and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, "encourages people in the San Diego region to come together to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits within a given amount of time. It's an excellent opportunity for the community to support causes that promote the health and well-being of all people in San Diego."

Kelly explained that giveBIG enables The Foundation to leverage its BetterGiving program to the benefit of the nonprofit community. "BetterGiving allows The San Diego Foundation to broadly share knowledge about local nonprofits' needs and the vital services they provide in the San Diego region," said Kelly. "Our goal has been to make philanthropy accessible, fun and easy for the entire San Diego community." BetterGiving provides in-depth information on nearly 400 local nonprofits – a number that continues to grow daily. "Its main objective," explained Kelly, "is to help donors and the community better understand nonprofit organizations strengths and needs and connect donors with organizations they care about most."

Jeff Block, Vice President and General Manager of ABC 10 (KGTV), noted that giveBIG aligned with the station's core mission to be engaged in the community.

"The giveBIG campaign enables all people and businesses in San Diego to have a profound impact by matching the gifts and encourage widespread giving," he said. "The holidays are a time when people consider giving extra support to the causes that are important to them, so the time seemed right for a program that allows their efforts and passion to be multiplied. By working together we can help create a better community." This giveBIG event is open to the public. Anyone who wishes to participate will be able to make a secure donation by debit or credit card on The San Diego Foundation's BetterGiving webpage www.giveBIGsandiego.org.
