Official Event Rules

  1. Only 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations with a current published portrait on www.bettergivingsd.org by 5 PM PST November 7th, 2011 are eligible to participate in the giveBIG San Diego.
  2. Donor is defined as an individual or corporation/business. Organizations are prohibited from donating to themselves.
  3. The Foundation will match, on a pro-rated basis, the total of donations made during the 36-hour period. However, only amounts between $25-$10,000 will count towards the match. For any single gift greater than $10,000, only the first $10,000 will be considered for matching funds. In addition, credit card gifts will be eligible for the match pool to the value of actual donations prior to deduction for the fees.

    What does pro-rated mean? This means that the percentage in which The Foundation will match donations will depend upon the total match pool amount as well as the total of donations raised during the event. If our match pool is $125,000 and the total of all eligible gifts raised during giveBIG is $500,000, then the pro-rated match will be $.25 on the dollar. Other markets who have had match days typically average $.15-$.30 on the dollar.

    Example using the $.25 on the dollar: If an organization raises $5000 during the event, they will be matched an additional $1250 from The Foundation for a grand total of $6250. Subtracting the 6% KIMBIA and Fairway Payments credit card and processing fees the organization will receive a check for $5950. The San Diego Foundation, which administers the BetterGiving website, takes no fees and supports the giveBIG event as a community service at no additional charge.
  4. Donors are encouraged to make gifts to multiple organizations of their choice. Each gift of $25 or more to a different organization will be counted on the leaderboard.
  5. Only credit card donations received during the 36 hours period (7 AM PST December 14th-7 PM PST December 15th, 2011) will be matched for this event. No donations via check, cash or stock will be accepted.
  6. Only MasterCard, Visa and AMEX donations will be accepted and matched for this event. Discover donations will not be accepted or matched.
  7. Each gift is 100% tax-deductible and irrevocable. All donations will be granted for unrestricted use by the chosen charities.
  8. Organizations will receive all donor information within one week of the giveBIG San Diego unless the donor has specified to remain anonymous.
  9. Each nonprofit should receive one (1) check totaling all donation(s), minus the 6% KIMBIA and credit card fees, and (1) check from The San Diego Foundation for the match portion, within 21 days of the event’s end.
