Common Scholarship Application

Common Application Scholarships

The Common Scholarship Application allows you to apply for many different scholarships using one application and submitting one set of application materials. All Common Scholarships require an application, essay questions, two letters of recommendation on official letterhead, official transcripts in a sealed envelope, and a copy of tax forms filed from the previous year. Some scholarships require additional materials, such as an additional essay, or forms verifying residency. Please thoroughly review the criteria for each scholarship for specific information before submitting your application.

More than 100 scholarships are offered through the Common Application. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $15,000, with an average award of $2,500. Most scholarships are specific to tuition, books, fees, and educational supplies, though some include room and board.

ALBERT W. & MILDRED HUBBARD SCHOLARSHIP

Al Hubbard spent most of his formative years in foster homes in the early part of the 20th Century, experiencing many of the problems associated with that environment. The result of those problems left him with few options, the best being to join the Navy. In the Navy, Al found a home and a life he loved. As a result of a permanent disability sustained on active duty, Al received a medical discharge from the Navy.

In 1939, Al arrived in Escondido with Mildred, his bride, and began working at a menial job. Over a period of time, through hard work, Al was able to acquire various businesses in Escondido. Good fortune shined upon the Hubbard's and they accumulated a significant estate.

While Al never complained about the loss of his Naval career or the disability he sustained, he did have regrets that he had not gotten an education. His attitude was "I made my money in Escondido and want to leave it in Escondido." It was his decision to leave the major portion of his estate to provide college scholarships for the youth of Escondido and Valley Center who "could not go to college without my help."

This Albert W. and Mildred Hubbard Scholarship is open to graduating seniors attending high school in Escondido or Valley Center, residents of Escondido or Valley Center already attending college, or students currently attending the San Pasqual Academy in Escondido, CA who plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year college or university in California.

She was the 2010 San Diego CIF 800 meter gold medal winner and went on to the State Championships.

The Amanda Post Memorial Scholarship is open to graduating San Diego County female high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year university in the United States, have participated in San Diego CIF cross-country and/or distance track and plan to run cross-country and/or distance track on a college or university competitive team.

ARREOLA/CBSPM SCHOLARSHIP

The Honorable Rafael Arreola has a long history of assisting others and of making an effort to improve the communities in which he lives. Born and raised by his mother and grandmother in a small village in Mexico, he was brought to live in the barrio on the east side of Riverside, CA at age 13. During his teen years in the barrio, Judge Arreola organized groups to clean up yards, paint and repair dilapidated houses, and make other improvements to the neighborhood. He saw firsthand the need for assistance. Now, as a community service, he develops and manages low-income housing projects for seniors, the disabled and the homeless.

After high school, Judge Arreola received two scholarships that inspired him to go to college and become an engineer. He first worked as an engineering aide, then a land surveyor, then assistant civil engineer. Eventually, he became an attorney, and finally, a judge.

Judge Arreola established the Arreola/CBSPM Scholarship to assist deserving students. He hopes to continue giving back to the community as his way of saying thank you for all the help he has received throughout his life.

The Arreola/CBSPM Scholarship is open to graduating seniors from a Sweetwater Union High School District high school who plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university, two-year college or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States.

AUSTIN BICE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Austin Bice Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 to honor Austin Bice. Austin attended Torrey Pines High School where he was nominated for the American Legion Boys State program and received the Rutgers Book Award for scholarship, integrity and leadership. Austin also played baseball and basketball for two years and played football all four years, earning varsity letters in his junior and senior seasons at Torrey Pines. Austin decided to attend San Diego State University and was asked to join the football team. His love for Torrey Pines High School carried over to San Diego State University where he loved being an Aztec. Eventually, Austin’s focus on his academics outweighed his desire to play football, so he left the team to concentrate on his studies. Austin was admitted to the International Business School where he focused on Spanish and Western Europe. The school curriculum required study abroad for one semester, so Austin worked and saved his money for three years to go. Austin chose Spain and Universidad Carlos III. His weeks in Spain were described by Austin as delightful and he just loved everything there. It is very sad that Austin’s life came to a tragic end in Madrid. Austin was a member of Masonic Lodge, San Diego Lodge #35, where he served as Marshal. His participation exemplifies the uniqueness of Austin; doing things he believed in whether it was considered the norm or not. Austin was very proud to be a Mason.

The Austin Bice Memorial Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who will attend San Diego State University and exhibit similar scholarship and leadership traits that demonstrate the moral and ethical values displayed by Austin.

BALLARD FAMILY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Linda and David Ballard have been blessed to come from families who not only valued education but also gave them the emotional and financial support to succeed in the areas of public relations and medicine. Being obedient to the biblical command: “freely you have received, therefore, freely give,” the Ballard’s goal is to be a channel of blessings in the lives of students who lack the support of a traditional family.

The Ballard Family Foundation Scholarship provides financial assistance for students aged 17-25 who have been in foster care and are pursuing a higher education. Special consideration will be given to Black/African-American students.

BARTA-LEHMAN MUSICAL SCHOLARSHIP

In 1991, Inge Lehman started the Lehman Family Scholarship Fund to help college-bound San Diegans. She and her husband, Dr. Chet Barta, were so pleased with the results that together they established the Barta-Lehman Musical Scholarship to help students interested in music education to further develop their talents. Sadly, Dr. Barta passed away in December 2006.

Dr. Barta and Mrs. Lehman had strong ties to music. Dr. Barta’s brother, an accomplished pianist, had a successful career in teaching piano at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Barta, a physician by training, grew up in a family where both parents played the violin, and Ms. Lehman’s son, Andrew, played with the Youth Symphony.

The Barta-Lehman Musical Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors, or current undergraduate or graduate college students who are serious and talented musicians planning to pursue a career in music and/or play professionally (string instruments preferred) and plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university, or music academy in the United States.

BIOCOM SCHOLARSHIP

BIOCOM is the largest regional life science in the world, representing more than 550 member companies in Southern California. These companies include biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic, renewable chemical, and biofuels companies. BIOCOM is actively engaged in ensuring that the life sciences industry remains a strong and growing part of the region's economy. In providing this scholarship, it is BIOCOM’s hope to help local students become future contributors to the Sothern California life science community.

Established upon the death of BIOCOM co-founder, architect James McGraw, the BIOCOM Scholarship recognizes and supports those students demonstrating academic excellence and a desire to pursue research in a broad range of life sciences related technologies.

The BIOCOM Scholarship is open to first or second year graduate school students who plan to attend or are attending an accredited graduate school program at CSU San Marcos, San Diego State University, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, the University of San Diego, or UC Riverside.

BOLLES ARTS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Mr. and Mrs. Bolles believe that through education in the arts children step forward on the path to a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life. Through the arts, a child can enjoy increased academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. Numerous scientific studies in recent years, and their own personal experiences, support their belief. Powerful and moving evidence of this lifelong learning can be seen on the “Program-RBRC” page of their website at http://www.bollesartsfoundation.com.

Too often the doors of opportunity are closed to young people who may have the talent and desire to pursue advanced study in the arts but do not have the personal resources to make that possible. That’s where The Bolles Arts Foundation comes in.

The Bolles Arts Foundation Scholarship is open to graduating seniors from Bonita Vista and Chula Vista high schools who plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university in the United States and will pursue an advanced education in music or dance.

BRESLAUER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Martin Breslauer, who established this scholarship, worked in city management with the City of San Diego for 30 years. He is one of six children whose parents never attended college but emphasized the importance of education. As a result, all but one of the children attended college, with some earning advanced degrees. It was therefore natural when the Breslauer Family Scholarship was established that it would focus on providing college scholarships for students who did not have the advantages Mr. Breslauer's parents provided their children.

The San Diego Foundation was recommended to Mr. Breslauer when he was having his will prepared. "The selection of The Foundation has been very gratifying to me," he says. "Although the fund may be smaller than many, it shows that individuals with fewer resources can still do some good for the community. The Foundation is a wonderful way to contribute since such a high proportion goes to the charity you select." San Diego High School was selected as the focus for the scholarship. "It is my hope that recipients will come back after their education and contribute to the community," he says.

The Breslauer Family Scholarship is open to graduating seniors from San Diego High School (in downtown San Diego), who plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university in the United States.

In this couple’s words, “we have enjoyed the beauty and goodness of San Diego for many years and now seek to return some of the benefits of our careers to our community. FRANK H. AULT SCHOLARSHIP

Frank Ault’s 37-year career started at San Diego Gas & Electric in 1969. His career was spent in accounting and auditing, his last 20 years as Senior Vice President & Controller for SDG&E and Sempra Energy, which was created in 1998, as the parent company when SDG&E and Southern California Gas Co. merged.

The scholarship was established by Frank, his co-workers and Sempra Energy in 2005 to support college students majoring in accounting and finance. He believes that talented professionals are needed to manage and lead the businesses of tomorrow.

His philosophy is that success comes from hard work and working through others. REUBEN H. FLEET MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Throughout his life, Major Reuben H. Fleet was known as a pioneer and unabashed patriot who believed in basic virtues such as personal integrity, self-reliance, devotion to duty, love of country, and respect for truth.
Major Fleet has become a legendary San Diego aviation figure. His first plane ride – in a rickety single prop taking off from North Island in 1917 – forever changed the course of San Diego. A few years later, Major Fleet moved his fledgling Consolidated Aircraft Corp. here from Buffalo. It later became the successful Convair Division of General Dynamics. Major Fleet’s business accomplishments could be attributed to his talent for developing unconventional approaches to problems that would engulf lesser businessmen.

Major Fleet held fast to a motto: “Nothing short of right is right.” Those words still guide the ongoing work of the Reuben H. Fleet Memorial Scholarship Fund as it provides scholarships in the field of science, engineering and mathematics.

The Reuben H. Fleet Memorial Scholarship is open to college students pursuing an undergraduate degree in science, engineering or math who are currently enrolled at an accredited four-year college or university in San Diego County, or San Diego County residents attending an accredited four-year college or university in the United States who have completed 54 semester units or 72 quarter units. THE SAN DIEGO FOUNDATION COMMUNITY COLLEGE MATH & SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

A recently published 10-year analysis showed declines in affordability and access to college for most Americans. The report concluded that, over the long run, no state had increased financial-aid spending enough to keep pace with tuition ("Measuring Up 2004," National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. San Jose, CA). In response to this need, the Science & Technology Working Group of The San Diego Foundation established The San Diego Foundation Community College Math & Science Scholarship Fund. This scholarship reflects the mission of the Working Group’s efforts to improve mathematics and science education in the San Diego region.

Although many scholarships exist, few are oriented toward mathematics and science. Even fewer are explicitly targeted to Community College students transferring to four-year colleges or universities. This program partners with individuals, donors and companies to provide scholarships to encourage and support community college students who are obtaining their baccalaureate in mathematics and science.

VINCENT TROTTER HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP

Joan Jones established this scholarship to honor her father, Vincent Trotter. Joan is so proud of him and believes she is most fortunate to have had a father like him who inspired her in so many ways.

Vincent Trotter was born in Munising, MI in 1926. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served his country as Acting First Sergeant in the 77th Ordnance Unit serving in the Asian theatre in World War II.

Raised on a diary farm, he was the first in his family to go to college. He graduated from Marquette University, majoring in accounting. After marrying Grace Roeder, they decided to pursue their life and dreams in California. This is the story of her father’s life. He was always making things happen and making a difference.

Vincent was the Vice President and Controller of West Foods, before retiring and starting his own accounting and tax business, which he managed for over 25 years. Vincent had more energy than a man half his age! He was constantly busy and always had a kind word to say about everyone. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, hunting, and going to the casino. He was an avid black jack player, participating in many tournaments. But, most of all, he devoted himself to his family, especially to his wife of 53 years after she suffered a stroke.

What was the secret to Vincent’s success and happiness? He loved people, had a positive attitude and never took things too seriously. Unfortunately, cancer took his life in February 2007. Before he died, Joan mentioned establishing a scholarship in his name. A big smile came to his face when they talked about the opportunity this scholarship could give someone.

Joan wishes everyone could have the type of father she had! If you apply for this scholarship you must demonstrate the kind of attitude her father had: a “can do” attitude and a belief that you can make a difference.

Because of her father’s experience with doctors, nurses, home health care providers, and hospice care workers during his battle with cancer, Joan decided this scholarship would be for students pursuing a career in the health care field.

The Vincent Trotter Health Care Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors or adult re-entry students pursuing and career in the health care field (nurse, nurse practitioner, health care aide, or hospice aide) who plan to attend an accredited two-year college, four-year college or university, or licensed trade or vocational school in the United States.
