BetterGiving Update

Ronne Froman and Ilona Mulvey.

We recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of our BetterGiving launch. Since July of 2010, we now have just over 300 published portraits and another 300 in the process of being completed. BetterGiving is an online searchable resource designed to create awareness for organizations that serve our community and connect donor passion with nonprofit investment opportunities. Each BetterGiving portrait showcases a nonprofit’s strengths and needs by providing detailed facts about an organization, including financial, programmatic and governance information. Through the utilization of BetterGiving, we hope to increase both nonprofits’ capacity to provide services and their visibility to interested donors and the community. Here are some of the many ways BetterGiving benefits nonprofits and donors alike:

Promotional Tool

  • Publicly viewable data on local nonprofits, made accessible to all
  • All portrait financial data reviewed by staff to ensure accuracy
  • One stop shop for potential donors to investigate and search for nonprofits that fit their giving needs.
  • Allows nonprofits to describe their services and clarify their needs

Research Tool

  • Provides an aerial view of nonprofit services throughout the community to highlight where the needs are
  • Allows for strategic collaboration – nonprofits who provide complimentary services can work together to provide more comprehensive services to their constituents

Educational Tool

  • BetterGiving allows nonprofits to reflect upon their organization to see where they could make improvements
  • Nonprofits can use their portrait as a way to educate new staff and board members about their organization.
  • TSDF staff can utilize BetterGiving data to target resource needs and provide direct services (leadership trainings, nonprofit resource center, sample policies/documents) or referrals

Financial Tool

  • Published portraits can accept direct donations

The San Diego Foundation has offered Indiana University’s The Fund Raising School coursework since 2002, and with the inclusion of this class, with more than 390 individuals successfully receiving their certificate in fundraising management.
