Climate

Climate

The San Diego region has an enviable lifestyle and economy, and a magnificent natural environment – and much of it is because of our climate. Our climate, however, is changing due to a build-up of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Left unchecked, climate change will have devastating consequences for our region. Through sensible adjustments we can maintain San Diego’s lifestyle and protect our treasured climate for future generations.

The Foundation’s Climate Initiative supports efforts to deepen community awareness about the local impacts of climate change and spur regional action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Over the next few years, The San Diego Foundation will continue to work with government, nonprofits, businesses, and consumers to advance regional efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change in order to avoid some of its most harmful effects.

We provide leadership, partnership and support for a wide range of local actions in the following six areas:

  1. Increase public awareness and support for local climate action
  2. Support research to build a scientific foundation for effective public policy
  3. Convene and partner with local governments to address climate change
  4. Provide technical assistance to support climate action planning by local cities and public agencies
  5. Support nonprofit organizations that will lead in addressing climate change locally
  6. Engage donors to contribute to climate action solutions in our region

The work of The Foundation’s Climate Initiative would not be possible without the thoughtful guidance and expertise offered by the Climate Initiative Advisory Committees. To see a list of current Climate Initiative grantees, click here.

Focus 2050 Study for the San Diego Region

Focus 2050 Study
The San Diego Foundation commissioned this landmark regional study on the implications of climate change to explore what the San Diego region will be like in the year 2050, if current trends continue. More than 40 multi-disciplinary experts from regional universities, local governments, public sector agencies, nonprofits and private sector organizations contributed to this research. The science-based findings presented in this study represent the best available information for decision makers to ensure our region’s diverse communities are resilient in the face of climate change.
